Peavy’s good, but we’re better

The Cardinals/Padres game is only heading into the 5th inning, but they’ve managed to pack a lot of drama in already.

You knew it was going to be one of those games right away when Jake Peavy struck out Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen both in the first inning to strand a runner on 3rd.  Since, then each of them has struck out AGAIN.  This marks the first time that Pujols has struck out twice in the same game ALL YEAR.

So, that just shows you how good Peavy is.  He’s already struck out 6 in just 4 innings of work.  Of course, he was that good and better in his last start and took the loss. (16 strikeouts in 7 innings against the Braves.)  So, let’s hope that trend continues today.

Mulder held his own the first 3 innings.  But, here in the 4th, the Padres took him deep back to back and now it’s 2-1 San Diego.

The one Cardinal run?  That’s right.  A Juan Encarnacion home run.  In April, I would never have believed I would see a day that Pujols and Rolen would combine for 4 strikeouts and Encarnacion would go deep.  Not to mention the struggling Molina got a base hit.  So, hopefully, the Cardinals can either get their big guys going or get some more from their bottom of the order guys because Peavy is certainly on today.

I think my favorite play so far though came in the bottom of the first.  With runners on first and third and only one out, Castilla hit a grounder to Pujols.  Pujols came home to Molina where he got blasted by Mike Cameron.  I’ll post a picture once I can find one.  Molina managed to hold on to the ball somehow and got the out.  Maybe Barrett should take notes on how a catcher makes the play, gets hit and doesn’t thrown a temper tantrum when he gets run over.

Since I’ve written this, the Cardinals have scored two more runs off an RBI single by Eckstein and one by Rodriguez and still have 2 runners on.  We should be able to get at least a couple more from this.
